Cold Brew Brew Guide

What You Need

Brewing Vessel
(a sealable jar or a dedicated cold brew system like the Toddy)
Paper or Cloth Filter
Heyday coffee (try our Oasis Cold Brew Coffee)
Filtered Water
Burr Grinder
Digital Scale

Instructions

Cold Brew is an easy way to have coffee ready to go anytime. It's simple to make and requires just a bit of advance preparation. Described here is the immersion brewing technique where the grounds are immersed in water during the brew.

Concentrate brewing is the classic way to prepare cold brew and gives you a finished product that you can dilute with cold water, sparkling water, or milk to match your taste. Brewing a concentrate also has the advantage of being versatile as an ingredient in other recipes.

But you can also make ready-to-drink cold brew that does not require dilution.

Brew Ratios

  • For cold brew concentrate (which requires dilution), use 167g of coffee per liter of water (1:6 ratio)
  • For ready-to-drink cold brew (no dilution needed), use 83g of coffee per liter of water (1:12 ratio)

Prepare

  • grind Heyday coffee to a coarse consistency, similar to breadcrumbs
  • if you are using a Toddy, then insert the paper and felt filters and be sure that the stopper is inserted
  • if you are using a mason jar, all you need is the jar; you will filter after the brew is complete

Brew

  • add ground coffee and filtered water to the brewing vessel
  • stir to make sure all of the grounds are saturated and that there are no dry pockets
  • cover and put the brewing vessel into the refrigerator
  • brew for a minimum of 14 hours and a maximum of 24 hours

Serve & Enjoy

  • once brewing is complete, filter the coffee to remove the grounds. If you are using the Toddy, simply place the brewing vessel on top of the carafe and pull the stopper. If you are using a mason jar, then you'll need to pour the mix through a filter to separate the grinds.
  • if you made a concentrate, be sure to dilute with cold water, sparking water, or milk; a 1:1 ratio will give a normal strength coffee, but try a 2:1 ratio if you like it really strong

Notes

You can store your cold brew in the refrigerator for up to two weeks and have a drink ready to go anytime.

More on Brew Ratios:

  • For concentrate brewing, we recommend a 1:6 brew ratio, but you can experiment from 1:5 (stronger) to 1:8 (weaker).
  • For ready-to-drink brewing, we recommend a 1:12 brew ratio, but you can experiment from 1:11 (stronger) to 1:15 (weaker).
